Pre-Engineered Metal Building
Design & Engineering

Northern State Steel coordinates pre-engineered metal building design and engineering for commercial and industrial projects
throughout California — connecting building configuration, structural requirements, permit documentation, fabrication and field construction.

EARLY DESIGN DECISIONS

Engineering Starts Before the Permit Set.

The most effective PEMB projects begin with the right building information established early. Dimensions, intended use, structural loading, openings and future building requirements all influence the metal building system before final engineering begins.

01

Building Geometry

Width, length, eave height, roof slope, bay spacing and building configuration establish the framework for the PEMB design.

02

Design Loads

Wind, seismic, snow, collateral and other project-specific loads are coordinated with the building location and intended use.

03

Openings & Equipment

Framed openings, overhead doors, mechanical penetrations, cranes and other equipment can affect primary and secondary framing.

04

Future Requirements

Future solar, added equipment and anticipated building uses should be considered early when they may affect structural design criteria.

ENGINEERING COORDINATION

Connecting the PEMB Design With the Rest of the Project.

A pre-engineered metal building does not exist in isolation.
The building system must coordinate with the architect, structural requirements, foundation design, framed openings, equipment, permit requirements and field conditions.

Northern State Steel helps keep those project interfaces connected so the PEMB scope can move from preliminary design through permit documentation, fabrication and erection with fewer gaps between teams.

01

Architect & EOR Coordination

Building geometry, reactions, openings and structural criteria
are coordinated with the project design team.

02

Foundation Interface

Column reactions, anchor-bolt requirements and building loads
are communicated for coordination with the foundation engineer.

03

Permit Documentation

Stamped PEMB drawings and calculations are provided with eligible building packages. Early PEMB engineering and permit coordination may also be contracted as a standalone service before building procurement.

04

Design Through Fabrication

Approved project requirements are carried forward into detailing and release for fabrication.

PERMIT DOCUMENTATION

From Building Design to Permit Review.

Once the building requirements are established, the PEMB design
progresses into the drawings and calculations required to coordinate the building system with the project team and permitting process.

01

Approval Drawings

Building geometry, framing, openings and project criteria
are documented for review before the design advances.

02

Permit Drawings & Calculations

The approved PEMB configuration advances into the engineering documents required for permit submittal.

03

AHJ Plan Review

Comments from the authority having jurisdiction are coordinated with the PEMB engineering scope as required.

04

Final Coordination

Following required approvals, project information is coordinated for detailing and the next stage of production.

DESIGN THROUGH FABRICATION

Keeping Approved Requirements Connected Through Production.

Engineering establishes the building system, but the project still has to move accurately from approved requirements into
detailing, fabrication and field construction.

Northern State Steel helps maintain continuity through those transitions so building geometry, openings, structural criteria
and coordinated project requirements remain connected as the PEMB moves toward production.

PEMB DESIGN & ENGINEERING FAQ

Questions About PEMB Engineering in California.

These are some of the most common questions project teams ask when planning and budgeting a pre-engineered metal building.

Who provides the PEMB engineering?

Northern State Steel coordinates the pre-engineered metal building
design and engineering process with qualified engineering resources.
Project responsibilities are coordinated with the architect, engineer
of record, foundation engineer and other members of the design team
as required by the project.

What information is needed to begin PEMB design?

Typical starting information includes building width, length, eave
height, roof slope, intended use, project location, design criteria,
framed openings, equipment requirements and any future loads such as
solar or crane systems.

Are PEMB drawings and calculations provided for permitting?

Once the building configuration and project criteria are established,
the PEMB design can advance into the drawings and calculations required
for permit submittal. The exact submittal scope depends on the project
and local permitting requirements.

How are AHJ plan-check comments handled?

Comments from the authority having jurisdiction are reviewed and
coordinated with the PEMB engineering scope. Comments that remain
within the original project scope are addressed as part of the
engineering coordination process.

How does PEMB engineering coordinate with the foundation engineer?

Building reactions, column locations, anchor-bolt information and
other structural requirements are provided for coordination with
the foundation engineer. The foundation design remains coordinated
with the project engineer responsible for that scope.

When can the building move into detailing and fabrication?

After the required design approvals and permit coordination are
complete, the approved building requirements can move into detailing
and release for fabrication in accordance with the project schedule
and contractual release process.
